The most bemedalled individual athlete from
the IAAF World Cross Country Championships is Kenyas John Ngugi, with 10 golds. He
won a record five individual and five team titles between 1986 and 1992. The most by a
woman is nine by Annette Sergent-Palluy of France between 1987 and 1993. Norways
Grete Waitz holds the record for the most individual womans titles with five between
1978 and 1983.
Kenya have been overwhelmingly the most
successful country in World Cross Country Championships. They have won every mens
team title since 1985, when Ethiopia beat them by 11 points. In 1997, Morocco came closer
to the Kenyans than any other nation in the past 13 years. The gap between the first two
teams was just 19 points, compared to the record 102-point winning margin enjoyed by Kenya
in 1986.
Kenya have also won every junior mens
title since 1988, and 14 out of 19 of the senior or junior womens titles over the
same period.
