MOST MEDALS Back

The most bemedalled individual athlete from the IAAF World Cross Country Championships is Kenya’s John Ngugi, with 10 golds. He won a record five individual and five team titles between 1986 and 1992. The most by a woman is nine by Annette Sergent-Palluy of France between 1987 and 1993. Norway’s Grete Waitz holds the record for the most individual woman’s titles with five between 1978 and 1983.

Kenya have been overwhelmingly the most successful country in World Cross Country Championships. They have won every men’s team title since 1985, when Ethiopia beat them by 11 points. In 1997, Morocco came closer to the Kenyans than any other nation in the past 13 years. The gap between the first two teams was just 19 points, compared to the record 102-point winning margin enjoyed by Kenya in 1986.

Kenya have also won every junior men’s title since 1988, and 14 out of 19 of the senior or junior women’s titles over the same period.
