IAAF Council meets in Turin
on eve of World Cross Country Championships
March
19 1997
MONACO - Monte
Carlo - The Council of the International Amateur
Athletic Federation has its first meeting of 1997
at the Hotel Principi di Piemonte in Turin on
March 20-21, on the eve of the 25th
edition of the IAAF-Pirelli World Cross Country
Championships, which take place in the Valentino
Park in the northern Italian city on March 23.
Among the range of
subjects to be discussed are the choice of venues
for the 1999 World Athletics Championships and
the 1999 World Race Walking Cup. Among the
candidates for the 7th edition of the
World Championships, the biggest event on the
IAAF competition calendar, are Helsinki
(Finland), New Delhi (India), Seville (Spain) and
Stanford (USA). The ballot will be conducted in
the following way: if no venue has a majority of
more than 50%, there will be a second vote with
the last city from the first round no longer
eligible. If necessary, this system will be
employed until a third round ballot between the
two remaining venues. The final choice of venue
for the IAAF World Race Walking Cup will be made
between Mezidon-Deauville (France) and Sydney
(Australia).
