About Podebrady
Situated
approximately 50 kilometres from Prague, the spa
town of Podebrady dates back to the end of the
twelfth century AD. In the
mid 15th century the town was home to
one of the greatest Bohemian kings, George - or
Jiri - of Podebrady, best known for his attempts
to establish a universal peace long before the
concept became fashionable. Modern day
Podebradys claim to fame is as a well known
spa resort specialising in the treatment of
cardiovascular ailments. The first spa opened in
1908 and some 11,000 patients visit the town
annually for treatment.
As befits the nature of the
towns main activity, the centre is replete
with acres of lush lawns, flower beds and
colonnades (the Lazenska Kolonada) leading down
the main avenue between the main square, Namesti
Jiriho, and the castle. Behind the colonnades the
park extends in a gentle stretch of gardens with
fountains and statuettes complete with a fully
functioning floral clock.
