Unconfirmed marks of 54.1 for 400 and 1:58.3 for 800. 2nd 92 W Jnr CC, 1st 92 W Jnr 10,000, 1st 93 World 10,000, 1st 93 W Cup Mar, 1st 93 & 94 Asian 10,000, 1st 95 Asian 5000 & 10,000, 1st 96 Oly 5000 (2nd 10,000). Transformed from very promising youngster (92 World Junior 10,000 champion; personal bests of 8:55.50 & 32:29.90) to a phenomenon in 93. After winning world 10,000 title in Stuttgart in 30:49.30 (15:05.66 second half) she produced incredible series of marks at Chinese National Games in Beijing in Sep 93, provoking worldwide controversy over the unorthodox methods used by her coach Ma Junren and his group (the Ma Family Army). She smashed Ingrid Kristiansen’s world 10,000 record of 30:13.74 on Sep 8 with 29:31.78 with a second 5000 run in 14:26.09 and last 3000 in 8:17.47 – times well inside existing world records. The day after a 4:01.55 heat on Sep 10 she bettered the previous world 1500 record (3:52.47) with 3:51.92 behind training companion Qu Yunxia (3:50.46), having never run faster than 4:17.18 (91) prior to 93! Next day (Sep 12) she won her 3000 heat in another world record of 8:12.19, the listed record being 8:22.62, and the day after that she took the final in 8:06.11. Also in 93 she won the Tianjing Marathon in April in 2:24:07 (69:09 second half), fastest ever début & Asian rec, and in Oct she won World Cup race in 2:28:16. Fastest in world at 10,000 in 94, winning Asian title in 30:50.34 (14:50.34 second 5000); won 94 Beijing Marathon in 2:31:11 but ran no faster than 8:50.79 for 3000 in 94. Along with most of her training-mates (except for Qu Yunxia) she split from Ma Junren at the beginning of 95. In 95 she clocked 14:53.08 & 31:23.24 and in 96 14:51.87 & 31:01.76.
