into 1.0m wind; was heading for victory in 100H when she hit the
last hurdle with heel of lead leg and stumbled over line 5th.
Four years later in Atlanta retained 100 title by 5/1000ths from
Merlene Ottey, to become the first repeat winner since Wyomia
Tyus in 68. Suffered from Graves Disease in 90/91 (life
threatening thyroid condition) requiring chemotherapy &
radiation treatment; came close to having both feet amputated
when they were burned by radiation; began serious training again
in May 91. Ran cross country & 800m in high school before
switching to sprints & hurdles. Fastest ever combination
sprinter/hurdler and first since Fanny Blankers-Koen at 48
Olympics to win 100 & sprint hurdles at World Champs level.
Ran her fastest ever 100 time (10.77w) and won US title in 94 but
then sustained hamstring injury and missed rest of season.
Returned in 95 to retain world 100 hurdles title. Daughter of a
Baptist minister, her life story was told in a made for TV film
shown in 96. Formerly married to miler Ron Roberts; now the
partner of Olympic TJ champion Kenny Harrison. Very strong; can
squat 400lb (182kg) for a bodyweight of 52kg (115lb) |
