became the first Ethiopian to set a world track record with
12:56.96 for 5000. Established world record of 26:43.53 for
10,000 in 95 (since broken; 5000 splits of 13:21.4/13:22.2) and
became first man since Henry Rono in 78 to hold both 5000 &
10,000 records; first man to run both sub-13 & sub-27. In his
12:44.39 5000, taking 11 sec off previous world record, his lap
times were 60.4, 62.4, 62.4, 63.2, 60.3, 60.6, 62.3, 61.7, 60.4,
60.2, 60.1, 60.2 and 29.8 for the final 200. In the first two
indoor races of his life, in 96, he set world records at 5000 and
3000 within a week. Had intended trying to emulate his hero
Miruts Yifter’s Olympic double but in Atlanta, when winning
10,000, sustained such severe blisters from the hard track that
he withdrew from 5000. Has run 1:46 800 in training. Ran a 2:52
marathon at high altitude when aged 16. One of 10 children; elder
brother Tekeye (who sought asylum in Netherlands) is an
international class marathon runner (pb of 2:11:45 in 94);
younger brother Belay also promising runner. Managed by Jos
