Ran 51.55 last lap to win 91 world title in 3:32.84, but ran poor tactical race in 92 Olympics – did not lose again at 1500 until (suffering from heavy cold) he was beaten by Hicham El Guerrouj in 96 Grand Prix Final. Retained world title in 93 in 3:34.24 with 50.62 last lap, and won for third time in 95 in 3:33.73 (51.3 last lap). Won 96 Olympic title (his 54th consecutive 1500/mile win) in 3:35.78 after clocking fastest ever non-final time of 3:32.88 in semi. At Rieti in 93 broke Steve Cram’s world mile record by 1.93 sec, biggest margin since Jim Ryun in 66, for time of 3:44.39, with 3:29.57 at 1500 en route. Set world record at 3000 with 7:25.11 (since broken by Daniel Komen) in 94. Clocked fastest ever last lap (52.2) in a 5000, winning in Zürich in 94 in 13:03.85. Set two more brilliant world records in 95; broke 4:50 barrier for 2000 with 4:47.88 (2:26.25 + 2:21.24; 57.58 per lap average = sub 3:52 mile pace) and lowered his 1500 record to 3:27.37 for biggest world record improvement since Jim Ryun in 67 (2:47.1 at 1200; 53.4 last lap). World’s no 1 1500m/mile runner for 7 successive years (90-96). Has run 46.85 400 in training. Name is pronounced NOOR-den MORE-sellee. Brother Abderrahmane Morceli, who coaches him, was 4th in 77 World Cup 1500, aged 19 (won by Steve Ovett), ahead of Steve Scott & John Walker; pb of 3:36.26 in 77 & 3:54.63M in 83; younger brother Ali (b 73) is promising 800/1500 runner who in 95 and 96 often set early pace in record attempts. One of nine children (has twin sister). Training sessions include 15x400 in 54-55 sec. Aim is to hold all world records from 800 to 10,000
