W Ind, dnq 95 World, 1st 96 Oly. Improved from 2.27 to 2.35 in
90, and to 2.40 and world title in 91. Has jumped 56cm above his
head (record is 59cm by Franklin Jacobs: 1.73/2.32i in 78).
Hampered by knee injury since 92 (he had surgery in 93) and it
was not until 96 that he returned to best form, winning Olympic
title with highest jump in the world (2.39) for the year.
Youngest of 10 children; one of his brothers, Russell, was in
Houston Elite TC team which set world veterans 4x100 record of
