The IAAF Council, at its meeting in December 1996 in Monaco, decided that the competing teams will be :

Africa,America,Asia,Oceania,USA,Europe plus Germany,
Russia(Women) and Great-Britain(Men).

The invitation for Germany, Russia and Great Britain was given in Saint-Petersburg after the European up.

Team Entries : Each team may enter one athlete for each individual event and one team for each Relay. The maximum number of athletes in each Men's team shall be twenty six (26), plus three (3) reserves, and in each Women's team twenty three (23), plus three reserves. Each team shall be responsible for the selection of its athletes and for its management, including arrangements for transport.

Team Selection
Africa	after the African Championships to be held in Dakar, 19/22 August.
America	taking into consideration the CAC Games, the Canadian Championships and the South American Championships
Asia	after the 12 Asian Athletic Championships in Fukuoka on 19-22 July
Europe	after the European Championships to be held in Budapest 17-23 August.
Oceania	after trials held in Brisbane on 8 August (but there will be some pre-selection for top athletes who will not be required to compete in this meeting).
USA	after the USA Track & Field Championships to be held on 17-21 June 1998.
GER	team selected after finishing 2^nd in the European Cup, both Men and Women.
RUS	team selected after finishing 1^st in the European Cup (Women).
GBR	team selected after finishing 1^st in the European Cup (Men).


Team Colours
Africa	orange and black
America	light blue and white stripes
Asia	dark purple and silver stripes
Europe	white and blue)
Germany	white with yellow and red stripes
Great-Britain	white with red and blue stripes
Oceania	black, gold and turquoise
USA	dark blue red and white trim
Russia	blue, red and white

Final Entries : The detailed notification of the selected teams, athletes and officials, must reach the OC with copy to the IAAF, if possible, by 20 August 1998, but not later than 1^st September 1998.

Confirmation : Confirmation of all entries must be made by 12.00 on the day preceding the first day of Competition.
