Women's Mile

We witnessed one of the slowest, if not the slowest race at this level of meeting when Olga Nelyubova towed the field around the first lap in 1:20.58. The pace did not quicken until the final 600m, when Suzy Hamilton took over. Surprisingly, good athletes like Yekaterina Podkopayeva and Hassiba Boulmerka were dropped as the leaders continued to speed up. At 1200m Hamilton led in 3:38.83 but World Champion Carla Sacramento looked ominously easy on her shoulder. The Portuguese swept ahead into the finishing straight and easily held off a challenge by Jackline Maranga. The winner ran the final 409m (sic) in 61.42.

Winner's statements
"The task has been obvious: to win it. So I counted with the sit and kick type of race. The slow tempo from the beginning on was a pleasure to me. I felt almost from the start on I could finish first."
