Women's 800 metres
Maria Mutola is still ahead 4-3 of Ana Quirot in terms of wins and losses in 1997, but it is the Cuban who has won on the biggest occasions. First in Athens, then in Cologne with the world's fastest in eight years, and now at the Grand Prix final.

The race, which was dominated by the two principals, followed a familiar pattern. Mutola raced to the front, leading at 400m (56.83) and 600m (1:27.29). Quirot shadowed her and the two were level for the first half of the straight before Quirot pulled smoothly away to win.

Winner's statement
"You are right. To run 1.54 and something means that may be an attck on the world record would be possible for the next year. At this time, I have no plans about my future, about records. I am just exhausted. It has been a season for devils."
