Men's Long jump

He said he was very tired earlier in the week, but on the day Iván Pedroso produced one of his best competitions of the year. He opened with a huge foul, near to 8.60. A windy 8.48 put him in front after round 2, and he followed this with a legal 8.53 (wind: 1.0). Until the final round Athens silver medallist Erick Walder was in second place with 8.40w until the final round, when James Beckford duplicated that distance legally. That was enough to overtake Walder (and gain an extra $10,000), because his next best effort was 8.35w to Walder's 8.12.
Winner's statement
"This year has been a wonderful one and the future obviously looks promising. However, the season has been a long one and I need a vacation, a long rest, before I can make any aims for next year, especially a new world record.
Next season I will compete indoors, but not so regularly as before."
