Facing the Genkai Sea to the north and surrounded by mountain ranges on three sides, Fukuoka is situated on a plain formed by numerous rivers which feed into Hakata Bay. The extended city region of around 1200 sq. km includes the Genkai National Park.

With its population of 1.3 million, Fukuoka city is the eighth largest city in Japan.

Fukuoka was host to the Universiades in 1995, and the 1997 IAAF Grand Prix Final will be held in the Hakata-no-Mori stadium facility within the Higashi Hirao Park, some 6 km from the city centre.
