Improved from 16.74 to 17.28 in 89 World Cup; excelled also in 92 World Cup for victory while in 95 European Cup he not only improved his UK record from 17.58 to 17.72 but produced the two longest (windy) jumps in history ... 18.43 (+2.4) & 18.39 (+3.7), breaking the 60ft (18.29) barrier. Estimated breakdown of the 18.43 was 6.50 hop, 5.60 step, 6.33 jump. Later broke Willie Banks’ world record by 1cm with 17.98 (+1.8) at Salamanca. Won world title in Gothenburg with first two jumps measured at world records of 18.16 (+1.3) and 18.29 (+1.3), winning by 67cm margin – the widest at Olympic/World Champs level since 1896. Won all 14 competitions in 95 and produced four longest ever legal jumps (18.29, 18.16, 18.00 & 17.98). Breakdown of 18.29 was 6.05 hop, 5.22 step & 7.02 jump. Vastly improved his 100m speed in 96 (from 10.80 to 10.48) but could not quite recapture 95 form. Beaten by Kenny Harrison for Olympic crown although merit ranked year’s no 1 by "Track & Field News"
