Set unofficial world road bests of 22:02 for 8k & 22:08 for 5 miles in Dublin in 93; world 12k best of 33:42 in 94; clocked 45:38 for 10M (début) in 95, recognised by AIMS as world road record. Youngest world champion (93) at 18 years 177 days. World age records include 28:40.77 10,000 (90) at 15. Coached early in career by his schoolteacher Samson Kimobwa, ex-world record holder for 10,000. Claims to have run 8:40-8:42 steeplechase in 1989 or 1990 (age 14/15!). Married Rose Cheruiyot (14:46.41 5000 in 96) in Nov 96. Cousin of Moses Kiptanui; sister, Catherine Kirui, is a good cross country runner
