The charming
city of Kosice is situated at one of the historical cross
roads of Europe, on the ancient trade routes between
Southern Europe and the Baltic states. With its 300,000
inhabitants it is the second largest city of Slovakia.
From the original royal residence of the 12th century,
the town grew into a walled town in the latter half of
the 13th century. During the war-wracked
periods of the 16th and 17th centuries Kosice became the
strongest city fortress in the then Hungarian empire and
was the headquarters of the Captain-general. Many of the
city's churches also date from this period.
