The application of science to the sport of athletics has helped top coaches and athletes to approach and break performance barriers over the decades - the 4 minute mile, ten seconds 100 metres, 18 metres triple jump, 2 hours 30 minute women's marathon have all now been bettered. Research scientists in areas as diverse as physiology, psychology, nutrition and biomechanics have presented their findings for interpretation by athletic coaches . Some of these results can be found in the IAAF publication, New Studies in Athletics (NSA).
This unified approach by coaches and scientists also ensures that millions of athletes worldwide can train and compete in safety.
