Women 20km Walk Final
Chinese Liu Hongyu, holder of the 20km walk all-time best performance, is the first World Champion in this event. Consequently her time of 1:30.50, only two seconds ahead of compatriot Yan Wang becomes a World Championship record . The bronze medal was for evergreen Australian Kerry Saxby-Junna (38 years old), who battled it out in the final few kilometres against Portugal's Susana Feitor, 1998 European Championship bronze medallist. The race was lead in the first kilometres by the Belarussian Kardopoltseva, who soon had to reduce her pace due to two warnings (finally she was disqualified). After this a compact group was formed, which broke around the 15 kilometre point. The Chinese duo and Russia's Natalia Fedoskina took the lead, but the Russian was later disqualified. Defending champion Italian Annarita Sidoti had problems in the second part of the race and was not able to finish.
