Situated 15 km to the north-east of the City of Athens, in the suburb of Amaroussion, the Athens Olympic Stadium will be home to the 6th IAAF World Championships in Athletics - Athens '97 from 1-10 August.

The stadium was completed in 1982 for the European Athletics Championships and has also hosted the 1st World Junior Athletics Championships. Originally designed to seat 75,000 spectators, the stadium will have its capacity reduced to 52,000 for the duration of Athens '97, to satisfy Press and Broadcast Media requirements.
